Feels Like Summer in an Icelandic Winter

No, winter is not over but the sun is here!

After a cold and a very dark winter back here in Iceland is very warming to finally see the sun reach over the mountain tops. It probably happened about a month ago, but the weather condition has not been the best so we haven’t seen so much of the sun. But this weekend the good weather came to town.

When the weather is still and the sky is clear there is is no excuse good enough to stay inside. So this weekend involved in a lot of tanning sessions, or freckle session in my case, where we spent a lot of time in the water as well as other activities to enjoy the beautiful weather.

For those who do not know, we have a lot of natural hot water here, and there are swimming pools all over the place. So last Friday, when we saw how ridiculously good weather was outside, we went straight to the Swimming pool in Akureyri which is the biggest pool in this area. We chilled in the pool for probably more than 2 hours, but after that I went with my friend to the stables to practice on my camera while she trained the horses for upcoming events.

Although the weather was beautiful and the sun was shining bright the temperature was still between -6° and -13° so it was a challenge to take photos for a long period of time because my fingers got so cold. At one time they were so white I thought they might fall off!

The weather was also good on Saturday, even a little bit warmer than the day before. This required another trip to the pools, but this time I decided to take a road trip with a friend of mine to the Hot tub in Hjalteyri.

We spent a good part of the day enjoying the weather and watching the birds and the sea. Of course I had to take a few photos as well and my friend got to be my model for the day.

After all the dark we’ve had to bear for the last months it has been nice to have a whole weekend full of sun and still weather. This does not mean the summer is here, the weather can turn any time and we’ll just have to tolerate what the weather gods throw at us and just hope we will get a warm summer this year. At least I have jump started my freckle collection for the year!
